The other day Mark took a picture of Joel and me, and upon seeing it I was like, “I look fat and tired.” And Mark, without thinking, responded, “Don’t we all?” It wasn’t exactly the response I’d hoped for, but it wasn’t entirely untrue either. Continue reading

Some people suck less than I initially thought
When I was pregnant with Matthew, a co-worker and I had a conversation – she offered to give me all of her son’s baby clothes, because she didn’t plan to have any more children. I happily told her I’d accept whatever she wanted to give me. We chatted about this (and some other things baby-related) so joyously on this day in early July. Me too
Today it was 70 degrees in February, and Joel’s babysitter called in sick, so I stayed home with him, and we went to the park. I put down a blanket and placed him on it so he could watch the slightly older kids play. I watched too as some moms interacted with their kids, and I could feel a lump forming in my throat, and it was kind of hard to breathe as the familiar thoughts washed over me, “I will never be like them. Little fishes swimming school
Today I took Joel to swimming lessons for the first time. Joel seems to be super amphibious (read: he splashes around in the bath), and he also has a long torso and huge hands, and he’ll probably be insanely tall, which reminds me of a documentary I once watched about Michael Phelps – he has similar features, which basically predestined him for Olympic gold (times 23), so I figured there’s no better time than the present for Joel to start on the road to his own similar destiny. Continue reading
